Life Update 20090920 [Sep. 20th, 2009|05:37 pm]
I've been busy!

12 Hour maintenance window this past Saturday night...

The few days leading up, I whiped up some perl talking to a database to perform ESX Server path sanity checking/cleanup/fixing utilizing the Controller WWN and the disk VML number across all of our numerous san+vmware environments.

I'm going to make a few improvements once I get it into Zenoss at work, I'll likely post it here...
I started writing it because I was looking at the maintenance windows, and looking at 30 luns, and then the potential 8 paths PER lun, and thinking of the amount of time it takes to fix paths by hand between just TWO hosts.... and we have some environments with 8 servers tied into a SAN.

In any event, I've been busy....

a few observations [Jul. 1st, 2009|10:42 pm]
1) Sir pizza is AWFUL! I MEAN it's worse then the $0.50 cardboard microwave oven pizza's that my room mate from college loved to eat.
2) Massive fluffy white clouds with occasional lightning inside against the backdrop of a clear night's sky, as the sun is still lighting up the cloud a little bit, but it's almost dark... is really nice. I CAN HAS EVERYDAY?
3) Kitty's are cute when they want to actually be nice and cuddly... but when they want to sit or lay in the oddest places and stair at walls... that's just weird.
4) I feel like trying my hand at writing again. Be afraid... be very afraid.

So I got new guy at coldstone. He didn't know how to log into the register, barely gave me my like it...... It was not a heaping pile of ice cream, it was flat.... It was a lacking bowl. And finding my mixins he was fumbling like crazy.

Any way, there are other things to do.

OMFG... Sooo tired [Jun. 11th, 2009|10:45 pm]
Replaced ceiling fan. It may have failed for several reasons. The light switch arcing.... but after taking it apart, I somehow have this feeling that the burnt spot inside the casing, and the melted wire had something to do with it.

In an event, got a nicer fan, and I'm exhausted. At least it feels good laying in bed.

1) Bathroom power was a ground fault interrupter. It was in the outdoor closet.... on the opposite side from the panel board... I didn't even realize it was ever there.
2) Fan... New fan obtained, and it will be installed tomorrow.
3) All switches swapped out in house. Electrical outlets remain. I believe 11 remain to be done.
4) Gave blood today to the vampires. I'm soooooo tired. I feel like its time to go be like a kitty cat and curl up.
5) I wants some hadoop at work damn it!

I HATE BEING A HOME OWNER! [Jun. 8th, 2009|07:53 pm]
Ok, beyond my electrical snafu of yesterday. One of the origional switches started failing and arced. I THINK it nuked the ceiling fan moter. How... I don't know.

I also went under the house to go take a look and see if I could see anything down there... No dice... but I did see water dripping from the housing on my AC unit. I went WTF. I threw the cut-off that is down there, and water POURED out of the unit.

The drain line ain't working worth shit, and my AC unit is rusting like crazy. Plus the copper pipe for the Hydronic heat is badly corroded. A couple or three years and those will leak most likely. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR^GGGGGGGRRRRRRRR.

So I FINALLY finished painting upstairs. Okay. I have two bedrooms left in the house to eventually paint, but the project that was started when I moved in has been finished. I also made good headway into the other project of swapping out the electrical outlets, switches, and face plates from beige to white. Beige only remains in the master bedroom, bath, and the dining room, which I can knock out the dining room any night this week..... However... I also did the upstairs bathroom. The wifey walked in about 3 hours later, and said "Hon... this outlet does not work". I get out my trusty volt meeter, and start testing. Nothing, zero, zilch. No voltage on the hot wires going into the outlet.

I go "WTF!?!?!".

I proceed to open every single box... I had touched. Nothing seems connected to it, or makes any sense as to why. I checked the other bathroom. No power there... I go out to the panel where the GFIC is located, reset it, check for voltage pasing through it, and I've got juice. I check one of the affected outlets, and nothing.

One good thing... The wire going to my microwave breaker was damaged and started to melt at some point... so I cut the end off, and re-did it in the panel.

Anyway.... Time for a grilled cheese to make me feel better.

Tomorrow I'll call a friend of mine who is an electrician.

NC House Bill 1252/Senate Bill 1004 titled "Leveling Playing Field/Cities/Service Providers. [Apr. 23rd, 2009|01:03 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |Home]
[music |silence is golden.]

I sent this off to my representatives today.

I am contacting you today regarding House Bill 1252/Senate Bill 1004 titled "Leveling Playing Field/Cities/Service Providers." While I agree with some aspects and with the reasoning behind some of the bill, I can't help but feel that it puts too great a burden on cities to provide an essential utility to its residents, and is an attempt by the the incumbent carriers in our fair state to strong-arm local governments in order to restrict competition and maintain their monopolies, so they may only continue to gouge the consumers of this state.

Having worked closely with the telecommunications industry these past 10 years, I have a very strong understanding of the economies of providing internet and telecommunication services, and without even considering the SEC 10k statements for the incumbent carriers, I can tell you they make money hand over fist on internet services. To force cities to artificially inflate pricing, to match the incumbent carriers, will provide a larger revenue stream for the municipalities, however it will also allow the incumbent carrier to always win out, which will stifle competition, which does not level the playing field.

Given the recent announced intentions and temporary retractions of Time Warner Cable, which in the name of increasing costs and infrastructure upgrades, had intents of increasing what they charge by between 1000% and 2500% above actual marketplace cost, while netting 4 Billion in profits last year from internet services alone, I feel that it would be a better for the public and the state for legislation to be passed to level the playing by bringing Cable Companies under the oversight of the Public Utilities Commission. Internet access in today's society is an essential utility. I also feel that passing legislation that would also provide PUC oversight of city operated telecommunications service providers, while not restricting their ability to provide services to their citizens, would be far more appropriate.

Thank you for your time.

Telecoms.. for Business [Apr. 15th, 2009|09:27 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I recently prodded Level3 to see if they were up to providing service in my area... and they are! Woot. It just so happens that my old AT&T rep went to L3, so he knows what I want, and he is exploring options... at least for work, however I did just prod him to see if he had transport into [REDACTED]'s CO, or [REDACTED's Telecom Main CO in the next town over] for the WISP idea......

FWIW... BellSouth/AT&T has already lost my business... I'm just in a contract until next year. I wish I could justify calling them bellsloth, but its really the AT&T part that has just made it all a disaster.

Now... we just need something like REM's Loosing my Religion, but with it about Loosing my Telecom.

So I wrote the Mayor and Town Council.... [Apr. 13th, 2009|10:03 pm]

To whom it may concern;

As some of you may have heard, local internet service provider, Time Warner Cable, has chosen to gauge the market place in Guilford county where limited competition exists, by choosing to explore a consumption based profit model for a service which historically has never been billed as such. The net effect is a mass increase in consumers bills, leaving consumers in a situation where they may not be able to speak with their wallet.

While the service was sold initially as unlimited, the consumption based billing is 1000%-2500% the actual cost for the service which Time Warner Cable sells to it's cable internet users... if they had to actually pay for it, however they do not due to provider peering arrangements. It's has been observed via the Time Warner Cable's SEC 10-K statements that they made over 4 Billion from Internet services last year after their costs were factored in, so in all reality, their gouging of the consumers is unjustifiable.

Now, I'll get to my point. With minimal resources, and a minor investment, it would be possible for the City of [REDACTED] to deploy a Wireless network over much of [REDACTED] and sell internet service to it's residents and those who could receive a wireless signal, which could provide an additional revenue stream for the city, as well as provide what is quickly turning into a nearly required utility for consumers to have access to in this day and age.

If interested, I would be happy to provide some time and expertise on wireless networks and internet transport to [REDACTED]. Additional information on Time Warner Cable's actions can be found below my contact information.

Thank you for your time,

I spoke with my account rep regarding the metered billing crap yesterday. The results mixed with a moderately sized grain of salt^H^H^H^opinion.

It appears that Time Warner Cable has a target revenue amount for businesses along with consumers. If the businesses are not spending enough money, then attached cable modems that are not on "Commercial" billing will end up being affected by the metered crap.

Standard Business Teleworker (3M Down, 384 Up) ~$45 + Parent Corporate account == Metered billing crap.
Commercial Business Teleworker (5M Down, 384 Up) ~55 + Parent Corporate Account providing TW Cable with so much (they wouldn't tell me, they want to review the corporate bill first) a month == No metered billing.

Talk about a fucking monopoly using monopolistic tactics to squeeze as much money as possible out of the consumers.

What pissed me off the most yesterday is the pompous attitude my account rep had... like it was their god given right to do this, and that they were justified because they were hurting soooo bad. Okay.. maybe they are somewhat justified, but this is not the way. They are already starting to hemorrhage customers. I've already decided the 3-6 month 5% cable bill increases are too much, so I'll be switching Likely to DirectTV.

I'll be meeting with my CFO next week to discuss and get with TWC to go over costs.

I'm pondering switching to DSL with the recent decision by Time Warner to be total idiots.

I'm a little over 2.5 miles wire route distance from my central office.... so my options aren't great.

I can get business class 3M down, and .5 up for $60/month. They want $20 extra for a static ip... which I kinda really want.

The residential version is $30/month. They have not been able to tell me what the difference is... and as far as I can see, it is just the number of mailboxes.

Some part of me can't help but wonder if there is a better way.... I wonder if the local telecom has pondered starting a WISP.....
